Teak earned its reputation on ship decks, not in showrooms. The timber carries natural oils and silica in the grain, which is why it resists water, insects and rot without any treatment at all. Left outdoors uncovered through a Malaysian monsoon, it simply gets on with it.

That’s the practical argument for this lounger. You put it beside the pool and then you stop thinking about it. No annual oiling. No covering it before a storm. No bringing it in during the rainy season.

How a teak sun lounger handles Malaysian weather

Our climate is unusually hard on outdoor furniture. Direct equatorial sun, then heavy rain, often on the same afternoon. Timber that isn’t dimensionally stable swells, dries, and eventually splits along the grain.

Two things prevent that here. The first is the species — teak moves less with moisture change than almost any other commercial hardwood. The second is the kiln-drying. Every board is dried to 12% moisture content before it’s cut, so the timber has already completed most of its movement before it reaches your deck.

That’s the step cheaper manufacturers skip, because kiln time costs money. It’s also why some teak furniture cups and gapes in its first year and some doesn’t.

The backrest of our teak sun lounger adjusts through multiple positions, from flat for sunbathing to upright for reading, on a stainless steel mechanism that won’t seize or stain the surrounding wood. Adjustment is made from the head end while standing.

All fixings are stainless steel. This matters more than it sounds — mild steel hardware corrodes in humid air, and the rust bleeds into the surrounding timber as black staining that sanding will not remove.

Product care

Left outdoors, a teak sun lounger fades from honey-brown to a soft silver grey over roughly six to twelve months. Many owners prefer the weathered look and do nothing at all. The change is entirely on the surface — the wood beneath is unaffected and loses none of its strength.

If you’d rather keep the original warmth, sand lightly with 120 grit, then finish with 240 grit. About an hour per lounger restores the colour completely. Repeat every year or two, or simply stop and let it grey.

For routine cleaning, mild soapy water and a soft brush along the grain is enough. Avoid pressure washers, which erode the softer grain and leave a permanently ridged surface.

Cushion covers are removable and machine washable on a cold cycle. Bring cushions indoors during extended heavy rain — the fabric dries quickly, but the foam lasts longer if it isn’t repeatedly saturated.

No sealing, varnishing or winter covering is needed. This piece is designed to live outside permanently.
