Outdoor Lounge Chairs 7 Secrets for True Comfort

outdoor lounge chairs
TL;DR: The best outdoor lounge chairs are built for comfort first, looks second. Look for a low seat height (around 40cm), a deep seat (around 80cm), a well-tested back angle, and solid materials front to back — solid teak frame, quick-dry foam, and outdoor-rated fabric. A truly good outdoor lounge chair should make you want to fall asleep in it, not just look good in a photo.

Outdoor lounge chairs aren’t dining chairs with a different name. A dining chair exists to hold you upright for a meal. An outdoor lounge chair exists for something slower — a long breakfast, an afternoon tea, an unhurried conversation with someone you like. It’s furniture built around the idea of not wanting to get up.

That difference in purpose changes everything about how a good outdoor lounge chair should be designed, and it’s why so many outdoor lounge chairs on the market get it wrong — they’re built to look good in a showroom, not to hold someone comfortably for an hour.

What Makes an Outdoor Lounge Chair Actually Comfortable

After two decades of building outdoor lounge chairs, we’ve found comfort comes down to three things working together — not one trick or one feature.

1. Solid Materials, Frame to Cushion

Everything from the timber frame to the foam inside the cushion needs to be built to last. A frame that flexes or cushions that flatten within a year will never feel comfortable for long, no matter how good the design looks on day one. Our frames are built using plantation teak manufactured by our partner workshop, All Seasons, in Indonesia, so quality is controlled from the timber stage onward.

2. The Back Angle — the Most Important Detail

If there’s one detail that separates a great outdoor lounge chair from an average one, it’s the back angle. There’s no single “correct” angle — every design has to be tested by feel, sat in and adjusted, until it actually relaxes the body instead of just looking relaxed. This is the part most cheaper chairs skip, because it can’t be shortcut with a spec sheet.

3. Comfort as the End Result

When the materials and the design come together properly, the chair shouldn’t let you go. That’s the actual test of a good outdoor lounge chair — does it make you want to stay, or even doze off? If the answer is no, the design has failed, regardless of how it photographs.

Our rule of thumb: always choose an ugly outdoor lounge chair that’s comfortable over a beautiful one that isn’t. You’ll only enjoy the second one for a week.

Outdoor Lounge Chair Dimensions That Matter

The numbers tell part of the comfort story. Compared to a dining chair, an outdoor lounge chair sits noticeably lower and deeper:

  • Seat height: around 40cm or lower, versus ~45cm+ for a dining chair — closer to the ground for a more relaxed, settled feel
  • Seat depth: around 80cm on average, well beyond the ~54cm typical of a dining chair — enough room to really sink in

These aren’t arbitrary numbers. A lower, deeper seat is what allows the reclined posture that makes lounging actually restful rather than just a slightly softer version of sitting up straight.

Outdoor vs Indoor Lounge Chairs — What Actually Changes

People assume outdoor furniture needs a completely different build to indoor furniture. In our experience, only two things actually change:

  • Finishing: outdoor lounge chairs are left sanded rather than finished, since sun and rain will wear a finish off anyway over time. Indoor pieces have more finishing options available since they’re protected from the elements.
  • Cushions: outdoor lounge chairs use quick-dry foam and outdoor-rated fabric so they can handle rain and humidity. Indoor lounge chairs can use HDPE foam and indoor-spec fabrics instead.

Everything else — the teak grade, the joinery, the design — stays the same as what we use for our dining chairs. We don’t believe in overcomplicating a good design with materials it doesn’t need. In fact, a well-built outdoor lounge chair works just as well brought indoors — sometimes even better, since it’s built to handle more than an indoor-only piece ever has to.

Where Outdoor Lounge Chairs Work Best

Outdoor lounge chairs don’t need a specific setting to work. We’ve placed them poolside, on patios and balconies, in gardens, courtyards, next to outdoor ponds, and even in covered foyers. As long as there’s a spot to sit back and relax, an outdoor lounge chair belongs there.

How Long Do Outdoor Lounge Chairs Last?

Left fully exposed to the elements, a solid teak outdoor lounge chair will start to grey within 6 to 12 months — the same natural weathering timeline as our outdoor benches. That greying is cosmetic, not structural. With basic care, a well-built outdoor lounge chair or lounge set can comfortably last two decades or more.

Buying an Outdoor Lounge Chair: Standalone or as a Set

Outdoor lounge chairs can be bought as single pieces or as a complete lounge set, depending on what the space calls for. If you only need one or two chairs, that works. If you’re furnishing a full lounge area, that works too.

One tip that saves time: measure your space before you go shopping. Knowing your available dimensions upfront makes it much faster to narrow down the right pieces once you’re comparing options in person.

What to Expect to Pay

Solid teak outdoor lounge chairs typically start from around RM1,800, depending on the design. It’s a bigger investment than a dining chair, which reflects the extra material, the deeper seat, and the additional design testing that goes into getting the comfort right.

Our Advice Before You Buy

An outdoor lounge chair is a big purchase, and comfort is genuinely personal — what feels perfect to one person can feel wrong to another. If your budget allows, take the time to visit a few places and sit in the chairs yourself before deciding. Furniture, more than most things, is hard to judge properly online. Seeing and sitting in a piece in person makes the decision far easier.

Come sit in our outdoor lounge chairs before you decide. Visit the Teakia showroom in Shah Alam, open daily 10am–7pm.
