Bedside Table Height & Size: Complete Guide 2026

bedside table height

Bedside table height is one of those things people worry about far more than they need to. The short answer: almost every well-made bedside table sits between 45cm and 55cm tall, and within that band it is genuinely hard to get it wrong. This guide explains why, with real measurements from our own solid teak bedframes and bedside tables, so you can check your setup in under a minute.

Quick answer: The ideal bedside table height is between 45cm and 55cm. Level with your mattress top, or slightly below it, both work well. With today’s thicker mattresses, most people end up choosing the shorter end of that range.

What Is the Right Bedside Table Height?

Bedside table height ultimately comes down to what you prefer:

Level with the mattress — if you like reaching across at the same level, pick a taller table (50–55cm).

Slightly below the mattress — if you prefer the surface tucked a little lower, pick a shorter table (45–50cm).

Here is the interesting part. Mattresses have been getting thicker year after year — standard mattresses today run 20cm to 30cm thick, and pillow-top models go well beyond that. You might expect bedside table height to grow to keep up. In our showroom, the opposite has happened: customers keep choosing shorter tables. As beds rise, people prefer the table surface to sit below mattress level rather than chase it upward. That is why nothing we make is taller than 55cm.

A Real Example: The Typical Malaysian Bed Setup

Most height guides online are written around Western bed setups. Here is the math for the most common setup we see in Malaysian homes — a solid wood bedframe with a recessed base, king or queen size, with a bedside table on each side.

Worked example:

Bedframe mattress recess: 20–25cm off the floor (this is where the mattress sits, inside the frame — not the outer frame height)

Mattress thickness: 20cm

Mattress top ends up at: roughly 40–45cm

Recommended bedside table height: 45–50cm

Plug in your own numbers: measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, then choose a table at or just below that figure. That is the entire method for getting bedside table height right.

And if you are still unsure — the 45–55cm band is forgiving. Even if your mattress sits lower than average, the difference between it and the table is so small it is rarely an issue in daily use. If you buy from us and the height feels off at home, you can exchange it for a different size. The risk is close to zero.

Width, Depth and Clearance

Once bedside table height is settled, width and depth are easy. Our bedside tables are 45–50cm wide and 45–50cm deep. We deliberately design them as close to square as possible — after more than 20 years of making furniture, we think that is when a bedside table looks and feels its best next to a bed. These proportions have been the industry standard for decades because they work.

How much gap should you leave between the bed and the table? Honestly — leave whatever gap you like, but from experience, bedside tables end up pushed against the bed by force of nature within a few weeks. Do not overthink it.

For tighter bedrooms, here are two combinations that work well:

Small room: one bedside table is sufficient — place it on the side of the bed you get out of.

Tight but want a big bed: a king bed with one bedside table, or a queen bed with two. The queen frees up roughly 30cm of width, which is exactly what a second table needs to breathe.

Open Shelf, Drawer or Cabinet?

Searches for “bedside table cabinet” are common, and the choice is simpler than it looks. An open shelf is mainly a convenience feature. It gives a home to the things you use every night but do not want sitting on top of the table — books, medicine, personal care items, a glass of water. Keeping them on the shelf protects them from accidental knocks and keeps the tabletop clear.

A drawer or closed cabinet does the same job with the contents hidden from view and away from dust. If you like a tidy look, choose a cabinet style; if you reach for the same items nightly, an open shelf is faster.

Will a Lamp Fit on Top?

Yes, comfortably. A 45–50cm square tabletop takes a bedside lamp plus two or three other everyday items — phone, glass of water, a book — without feeling crowded. Unless you are planning an unusually large lamp, tabletop space is not something you need to calculate.

Why Solid Teak for a Bedside Table

A bedside table looks like passive furniture, but it is a high-traffic item. It gets touched every single day — drawers opened, phones dropped on top, knocks from cleaning. That daily wear is exactly where materials matter.

Properly processed solid teak easily withstands bedroom conditions and holds up to daily use in a way MDF and veneer simply cannot. Water rings from a forgotten glass? On solid teak they are easy to remove; on laminate the damage is often permanent. Solid teak also ages beautifully rather than deteriorating, and it holds real value in the second-hand market if you ever want to upgrade a few years down the line — something no MDF bedside table can claim.

We make every bedside table in-house at our own small factory in Indonesia, from SVLK-certified plantation teak, and we price them modestly on purpose — solid teak should be accessible to anyone. Our range is a small, curated selection of designs tried and tested over the years. You can see them all on our solid teak bedside table collection page.

Do Hotels Choose Bedside Tables Differently?

We supply hospitality projects as well as homes, and the honest answer is: not really. Hotel bedside table height and dimensions are very similar to residential ones. The differences are practical extras — built-in plug points for charging, and more wall-mounted options to make cleaning under them easier. If you are furnishing a homestay or Airbnb, those two features are worth considering. Beyond that, these are bedside tables, not the latest iPhone — there is not much hype to be had, and we mean that as a compliment to a product category that has quietly worked the same way for a hundred years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a bedside table be higher or lower than the bed?

Either works. Level with the mattress top or slightly below are both comfortable. With thicker modern mattresses, most customers now choose a bedside table height a little below mattress level.

What is the standard bedside table height in cm?

The standard bedside table height is 45cm to 55cm. This range has been the industry standard for decades and suits the vast majority of bed setups, including typical Malaysian bedframe-plus-mattress combinations.

How wide should a bedside table be?

Around 45–50cm wide and deep. Near-square proportions look the most balanced next to a bed and give enough surface for a lamp plus two or three everyday items.

Can I use just one bedside table?

Yes — in smaller rooms one table on the side you exit the bed is perfectly practical. For tight rooms, consider a king bed with one table or a queen bed with two.
